Baden's First 100 YearsPage Eighteen
Baden is situated on what is known as "Depression Lands." The soldiers of the Revolution were paid in Continental Script, which had a very reduced value, so, instead of a Bonus, certain frontier lands were surveyed and sold to the highest bidder, at auction, in Harrisburg. The money realized made up the difference in value of their pay. One of the Hills was an original surveyor and received land in payment for this service. The original survey was dated May, 1785. Baden, at the present time, covers five strips of land, known as Daniel Leets-No. 22, 23, 24, 25, 26. Daniel Leet was Deputy Surveyor. These strips began at the river and ran back about a mile to the top of the hills and contained about two hundred acres each. The title is on a parchment designated "as of Allegheny County" and about the year 1800 Beaver County was formed. These strips of land were also named. The first developed section of Baden, Plot 25, named "Caleb's Delight" was the property of Caleb Way, an ancestor of Miss Agnes Way of Edgeworth, and Fred of "Betsy Ann" fame.
