CHRIST EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCHTo write of Christ Lutheran Church of Baden without bringing in the names and something of the personality of those earnest workers responsible for its inception and growth would be meaningless. We know only too little of the difficulties and trials of those who early gave their faithful and noble efforts to promote the Faith. Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church of Baden was organized in 1858 by Rev. Dr. William A. Passavant, Sr., one of the most forceful and influential personalities the Lutheran Church in America has ever had. The church in Western Pennsylvania has probably never had another administrative leader who achieved equal success in as many lives of interest: missionary, editorial, educational and philanthropic. His activities were incessant. Through his efforts and wise administration, homes for orphan children and old people, churches and hospitals have been established in various cities. These institutions have given and continue to give unstinted service to unfortunate and suffering mankind. Among the institutions organized by D. He was the organizer of The Pittsburgh Synod of the Lutheran Church in 1855 and Editor of "The Missionary" and "The Workman," Lutheran publications of much influence. Dr. Passavant was born in Zelienople October 9, 1821, and died June 3, 1894. He is buried in Zelienople, Pennsylvania. Following organization of the Baden Church, the congregation met for several years in Stover Chapel of the M. E. Church, located on the west side of State Street at its intersection with Phillips Street. Part of the original building being now (1938) occupied as an office by Shane Brothers. In 1861, a plain frame church was built on the Burkhart Plan of Lots at the corner of Jefferson and Rotteck Streets, by Thomas A. Herring and a. T. Forsythe, costing approximately $1,500.00. The congregation, when organized, had twelve members, among them John McKee and family, and Mrs. Barbara Neely and family, and Mr. a. Price Bryan. The Baden church is first mentioned in the records of The Pittsburgh Synod in 1862.
