Baden's First 100 Years

Dr. Passavant was pastor of the church from 1858 until 1879, a period of 21 years. He made the trip from Pittsburgh every two weeks and in time built up a congregation of 50 members. Baden, in 1879, had a population of less than 400 people. he was ably assisted in these early years by the deacons and other officers of the church, notably by Mr. A. T. Forsythe, who was a deacon and served as superintendent of the Sunday School for a period of 35 years; by Mr. A. Price Bryan, the first organist and choir leader for many years, and by G. Y. Boal, a profound student of the Bible and as such noted throughout the country. Among other active and early members of the congregation were Mr. Duerr, L. I. Berry, Mrs. Rachael Blazier, Mrs. Usable (Bryan) Dippold and Mrs. belle (Henry) Bryan.

During the pastorate of Dr. Passavant, other churches were organized and established at West Logstown, now a part of Aliquippa, at Rehoboth and the House of Mercy at Crows Run. In these, Dr. Passavant was ably assisted by Deacon Forsythe and Dr. Boal. Both of these laymen at times occupied the pulpit. Mr. Forsythe also acted as Sunday School Superintendent at Crows Run for a number of years.

Mrs. Usable Dippold was an eminent teacher of the Primary Department of the Baden Sunday School for a great many years, relinquishing her teaching about 1900.

The parsonage lot and property consisting of several acres, was located on State and Phillips Streets and was secured for the congregation by Dr. Passavant. This property had a frontage on State Street of 150 feet and extended east along the country road, now Phillips Street, to Gallagher's stone quarry. Lots from this property, now occupied by the new Baden School Building and by private residences east of Berry Street, were sold in the early Nineties for $150.00 each. A frame parsonage was erected in 1889, fronting on state Street and was in continuous use as a parsonage until 1921 when it was sold to Mr. Fruth. Other lots were sold from this property at different times until 1923 when the last corner lot at State and Phillips Streets was sold and on which has been erected the Brown Building.
