the spiritual needs of this group were supplied by priests from Pittsburgh parishes at the home of George Mohr, located in Economy Township, a few miles east of Baden. Descendants of George Mohr are a. f. Moore Ambridge, and a. J. Moore, Baden. In 1868, the growing catholic population, realizing the handicap of not having a church, set about to erect a building that would give honor and glory to God, serve as an inspiration to the community, and be a haven to their souls weighted with the burdens of the day, wearied with the cares of the world. Its location is Phillips Extention, Economy Township near the Minis School, about two miles east of State Street, Baden. In the year 1869, the church was dedicated, and used for Divine Services until the year 1928. The first marriage to be solemnized was that of Catherine Moore and Michael McGuire. This couple also celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary with services at the same church, June 13, 1931.

Rev. Thomas Bryson, who was chaplain to the Sisters and the boys at Mt. Gallitzen academy, was appointed by Most Rev. Regis Cenevin, Bishop of Pittsburgh diocese, the first resident Pastor of St. John the Baptist Parish in the year 1908. He served the parish faithfully till the year 1919, after which time he was succeeded by Rev. James O'Connell whose tenure of office was less than a year. Rev. Thomas Dunn, the next appointed chaplain to the Academy and pastor to the parish, was untiring in his efforts towards and zeal for the salvation of souls. Father Dunn remained at this post of duty from the year 1920 till 1935, succeeded in turn by Rev. Raymond Foster, February, 1935.

In the interim, Baden witnessed a growing population and numbered among its inhabitants were members of St. John's Parish. The parish limits extend from Conway Public School to the bridge at Beyersdale, from the river through Economy Township for a distance of eight miles.
