G. T. Swartz, and H. C. Hartswick. At the first meeting of the reorganized Board, R. L. Cummings was elected President; H. C. Hartswick was elected Secretary, and r. W. Compton was elected Health Officer. This board was active in checking an epidemic of Scarlet Fever in 1937. In January and February of 1938, an epidemic of mumps and measles broke out. All public gatherings were postponed for two weeks. The Board has been very efficient in coping with the problems that have arisen since its reorganization in 1937.

BADEN POST OFFICE

The post office at baden was established in April, 1852. It has been served by the following postmasters:

David Anderson, appointed April 1, 1852; John Nichols, July 29, 1861; Charles Brown, February 25, 1863; John Y. Marks, February 17, 1864; Isaac Grim, October 5, 1870; Leonard I. berry, december 9, 1870 (in september, 1892, Mr. Berry was killed by the fall of a bank near the post office, and until the appointment of his successor, Dr. G. Y. Boal, his first bondsman, was acting postmaster); George S. Bazier, October 7, 1892; Henry A. Bryan, December 22, 1896; George S. Blazier, November 5, 1900; Matthias L. Tena Neely, our present postmistress, received her appointment August 9, 1937. Mrs. Mattauch served this community the longest of all our Baden postmasters.

The first Rural Free Delivery Route out of Baden was operated by Mr. Louis Hartsough in 1906. The present Rural Carrier is Arthur E. Wagner, who has served ten years. The length of his route is 31 miles. The number of boxes is 160 and people served is 750. The Baden Post Office is locatd in a small brick building on State Street.

The Economites

The Economites of Harmony Society were neighbors of Baden since 1851. Their 3,000 acres of land adjoined the Baden community. The quaint old town of Economy was the property of the Harmony Society, disciples of Father Rapp who came from Germany to America to enjoy a religious toleration.

For years services for a physician in early Baden were seldom required for "Boneset Cordial" from the Economite's vats was the standard remedy for all illnesses. However, beginning around 1867, the physician to the Economites for more than 30 years, was Dr. G.Y. Boal of Baden, who drove a horse and buggy over the Big Road to administer to the ills of these famous people. Quoting from John Duss "Dr. Boal was a preacher, a clever doctor, and knew how to keep his mouth shut."

Too, the famous cookies, for which Economy alone had the recipe, were sold to out-of-town folks.
