Baden's First 100 YearsPage Fifty-four
Pennsylvania RailroadIn 1890 the western lines centering in Pittsburgh were absorbed by the Pennsylvania Railroad and were designated the Pennsylvania Lines West. Since 1920, when these records came back from Federal Administration, which had been in effect during the World War, they have been incorporated in the Pennsylvania System, of which they now constitute the Central System. The present tracks were changed and laid near the Ohio river back first in 1904, then again in 1910. The first timetable showed but three trains scheduled in either direction, including passenger and freight. The first ticket office in Baden was in the corner of Mr. David Anderson's Grist Mill - on the site of the present station. There has been three ticket office buildings here. Mr. Anderson was the first ticket agent; L.I. Berry, second; followed by his widow and daughter, Mrs. Berry and Ms. Nora; Mr. E.A. Miller, Mr. E.E. Heacock of Leetsdale, is the only ticket agent who is living and in active service with the company. He was one of Baden's most genial agents. Mr. George Bowan was the last regular station agent. The station still stands but is no longer in use. Conway yard began in 1887 as a set-off yard of 720 cars capacity and developed into a gravity yard of 7800 cars capacity. It receives and dispatches cars from nine divisions and makes 89 classifications of the cars handled. It parallels the main track for a distance of four (4) miles. The reclamation plant in Conway yard is recognized as one of the finest in the world. It began operating in 1926. An average of 2,000 tons of material is reclaimed and 20,000 tons of scrap sold each month.
