Baden's First 100 Years

Messrs. John L. Skeehan and Paul Wheeler procured the material for a 30-foot steel tower which was erected at the rear of the fire house on which the new siren was placed.

At this time one alarm box was purchased and placed at the corner of Phillips and State Streets, thus making it possible to put in an alarm from the code box or the street box.

On November 22, 1930, Council passed an ordinance covering the pay of a volunteer fireman while actively engaged in fire fighting in the borough. The rate being $1.00 for the first hour and $.50 for each succeeding hour.

On January 13, 1932, the Fire Department and Council purchased an inhalator at the price of $160.00 and two gas masks at a price of $50.00 each. These new purchases added greatly to the fire fighting equipment.

Within the last two years, with the help of Council, the Fire Department has purchased new coats, boots and helmets, which have been placed on the fire truck.

All running expenses and the purchase of minor equipment of this Fire Department has been provided through proceeds derived from benefits held by the department for which we wish to express our appreciation.

During the month of December, 1927, the Ladies Auxiliary of the Fire Department was formed. The following are charter members:

Mrs. Byron Blackford
Mrs. C. M. Bryan
Mrs. C. A. Campbell
Mrs. James Corbett
Mrs. C. J. Dumeyer
Mrs. W. J. Fett
Mrs. P. J. Fisher
Mrs. H. L. Guthrie
Mrs. Grant Peters
Mrs. W. C. Ramer
Mrs. Ruth R. Harpster
Mrs. C. Welling

Mrs. W. C. Ramer served as president. This organization added greatly to the activities of the Fire Department.

This department has been able to take care of all the fire fighting needs of the Borough, as well as furnishing fire protection to the Mt. Gallitzin Academy and adjacent territory.

The Baden Volunteer Fire Department since its original organization takes great pride in the fact that fire losses within our borough have been far below that of other communities of our size.

The new Borough Building, which is to be erected at the corner of Linmore and State Streets, will be the Fire Department's new home and we are anxiously looking forward to its completion.

The officers and members of the present Fire Department are as follows:

Vice President
Secretary
Treasurer
