THE AMERICAN LEGIONAn organization in which membership cannot be purchased - its members earned the necessary qualifications by their service in the World War, and an honorable discharge from active service of the United States Government during that emergency. Its objects compare closely with those of the G. A. R. - to foster patriotism - perform civic service - to lend every assistance to their wounded and incapacitated comrades, and to perpetuate a reverence for the memory of their departed comrades. The organization of Baden Post Number 641 was started September 30, 1930. Permanent officers were elected and installed on October 15, 1930. The charter from the national headquarters was held open until November 15, 1930, when 25 members were listed as charter members. Since organization, the Post has met regularly, taken an active part in County affairs, carefully arranged and carried out programs for the proper observances of Memorial Day and Armistice Day. Each year the Post presents the official American Legion Schoolboy Medal to the outstanding boy of the graduating class in the Baden School, and also of Mt. Gallitzin Academy. The annual Community Christmas Tree and treat for the school children has been one of the Legion's more pleasant activities. The Post sponsors an Auxiliary and appreciates the able assistance of the ladies. The following is a list of the Past Commanders of the Baden Post:
Realizing that each year finds the number of ex-service men declining at an alarming rate, yet it is our earnest hope and constant endeavor to prevent the coming generation from finding it necessary to write similar history for our next Centennial. We want our soldiers to remember that they have not been forgotten, and patriotism is not a symbol of a day, or only the duration of the war and a short time thereafter.
AMERICAN LEGION AUXILIARYThe American Legion Auxiliary to Baden Unit No. 641 was organized December 8, 1934. The 12 charter members were: Mrs. Luvenia Shephard, Mrs. Edna Kemp, Mrs. Leona Schoenfeld, Mrs. Norma Dumeyer, Mrs. Hazel
